Frequently Asked Questions

General questions

Is the BCFA a non-profit organization?

Yes, the BCFA is a non-profit association based in Belgium and founded in 2012. You can find out what preceded this in our History.

What does the BCFA finance?

The BCFA funds Belgian research that can benefit animals with cancer. The BCFA also supports projects that promote education about animal cancer (such as the Oncowaf website for dog owners with questions about cancer, and veterinary students' participation in oncology conferences).

Does the BCFA also sponsor cancer treatments for animals?

The BCFA only sponsors animal cancer research, not treatments themselves. Within a clinical trial, a treatment being studied may be funded within the research project.

Can I get veterinary advice for my pet through the BCFA?

General information about cancer in dogs can be found on the website www.oncowaf.be . However, we do not offer diagnoses or treatments for animals. We do share what research we support with the public through our website. You can sign up for these updates via email.

For veterinary advice on a specific health problem with your pet, we recommend contacting your veterinarian.

How do I find a clinical trial for my dog to participate in?

To find a clinical study for a dog with cancer, you can visit the Oncowaf database.

My question isn't listed here. What can I do?

Please submit your questions via our contact form. We'll respond as soon as possible.

How can I contact the BCFA?

It's best to contact us first through our contact form. Further steps for collaboration will be handled by our board.

Researcher

What type of research does the BCFA sponsor?

Based on the objectives of our non-profit organization, we primarily fund research "close to the animal," i.e., research that has a clinical link to the animal and the disease. In that respect, fundamental scientific research is less closely linked to the objectives of the BACF.

Why and how should I acknowledge the BCFA in my work?

Always mention the BACF in publications, presentations, or media related to your research. This mention raises awareness of the BACF's role in advancing animal cancer research, which can attract further research investment. Please follow the guidelines in our agreement. Be sure to keep us informed if your research results in media coverage.

Where can I find the BCFA logo?

You can download it here: currently only the Dutch version or the French version.

Donation

I'd like to make a donation right away. How do I do that?

You can make a donation of your choice directly via our DONATE page, either by bank transfer or through the app. We appreciate any amount.

How does the BCFA handle my donation(s)?

The BCFA is a non-profit organization. The board decides, in consultation and after careful consideration, how to allocate the funds. In practice, it begins with a project request from a researcher or research group, after which it is assessed whether the project aligns with the BCFA's objectives, namely research close to the animal.

I'd like to make a donation through my will. What's the best way to arrange this?

The BCFA is registered with www.testament.be . This portal organizes donations through wills. They also offer free legal advice and assistance with making a will. More information can be found on our DONATE page.

Can I get a tax certificate for my donation?

We are currently not authorized by the Ministry of Finance to issue tax certificates in response to a donation. We hope this changes in the near future.
